Biography:

Master Joan Richert started her martial arts journey in 1974 at the Natick, MA studio of United Studios of Self Defense. She became a black belt in June of 1977.

She would go on to become the first woman awarded the title of Master in that system in March of 1989. She has owned or operated more than a half dozen schools on her journey to becoming a 12th degree black belt and board member for the Villari's Studios of Self Defense.

In addition to pursuing mastery in Shaolin Kempo Karate she has studied Arnis Lanada, Aikido with both Saotome Sensei and Kanai Sensei, and Russian Systema. She uses all of her experience with varying systems to enhance her ability to explain concepts and techniques to her students. In addition to broadening her martial arts experience, Master Richert graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BS in Exercise Science and Wellness from Ball State University. She also trained to the level of Master Teacher Trainer in Pilates. She finds value in combining different understandings of body movement and mechanics to enhance her teaching and martial arts practice.
