Silvia’s journey into martial arts began in her mid 20s at One with Heart in Portland, Oregon. A sixth-degree black belt, she has trained Poekoelan Tjimindie Tulen since 1987 with Barbara Niggel, Scott Montgomery and Janesa Kruse.
Silvia opened her school, Naga, in Beaverton, Oregon, in 2003 while her two children were young. Some of her fondest memories are of working out with her kids who are now 19 and 21.
In 2015, Silvia successfully negotiated the fractionalization of the Poekoelan community in which she “grew up”. Her school, deepest friendships and students have emerged strong and whole.
Silvia teaches martial arts, self-defense, de-escalation, active shooter survival and meditation at her school and around Portland at companies like Nike, IRCO (Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization) and the FBI.
Silvia is an empty-nester living with her martial artist husband and their dog, Penelope. In her spare time, Silvia writes, swims, hikes and plays with clay.
