Biography:Zosia Gorbaty, Hanshi, began the study of yoga in 1966, and martial arts in 1976. Her yoga training started with Swami Satchidananda, founder of Integral Hatha Yoga, and has always been her foundation. She trained in the arts of Nisei Goju Karate and Mas Oyama's Kyokushin Karate before joining GM Chaka Zulu's dojo in 1981. In 1984 Zujitsu-Ryu Martial Arts Federation was founded, and assisting GM Zulu they operated a dojo in NYC for many years. At the end of 2013 Gorbaty, who earned a Master's Degree in Physical Education at NYU, retired after 30 years teaching self-defense, karate, and yoga as a faculty member at Adelphi University and Queensborough Community College, CUNY. She has presented countless seminars on safety-rape prevention, volunteered as a certified ER rape crisis advocate, has appeared as a self-defense expert on radio and TV, and is a NWMAF Self-Defense Certified Instructor. Gorbaty served as the Executive Director of the Association of Women Martial Arts Instructors 2009-14, and the National Women's Martial Arts Federation 2002-4. She has been a trainer at numerous national and international events for AWMAI, PAWMA, NWMAF, Camp Danzan Ryu, Camp Suigetsu, Jujitsu America, Atlanta's People in Progress, Power Kix MA, Mejishi Dojo, the Friendship Exchange Tour in China, and El Halev in Israel. She is a recipient of the World Head of Family Sokeship Council Silver Life Achievement Award, Masters Hall of Fame, and 30+ Year AWMAI Hall of Fame. In 2015 Gorbaty was awarded 9th Dan, declared Co-Inheritor of Zujitsu-Ryu with Hanshi Benitez. in 2017 Gorbaty and her husband GM Zulu moved to Laguna Woods, CA where they continue to train daily, offer seminars, and lead the Zujitsu Federation of affiliated dojos. |
